In a significant move aimed at regulating the sale of medicines, the Central Government has made it mandatory for consumers to produce a valid doctor's prescription while purchasing cough syrups. The decision comes as part of amendments to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, with the objective of ensuring responsible use of such medications and preventing misuse.
As part of the revised regulations, the Centre has removed cough syrups from Schedule K, which previously allowed certain exemptions in the sale of medicines. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an official notification regarding the change. The new rule is expected to strengthen monitoring of medicine sales and promote safer healthcare practices across the country.
