Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to support Indian-made and locally produced goods during the festive season, highlighting their growing presence in international markets. Speaking during the 139th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, he said the Vocal for Local initiative is more than a slogan and plays an important role in building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He noted that choosing domestic products helps farmers, artisans, small traders and rural communities expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods. As examples of Indian products reaching overseas consumers, Modi referred to makhana from Purnia district in Bihar being exported to Greece and the well-known toor dal from Kalaburagi in Karnataka finding a market in the Maldives.
The Prime Minister also praised Maharashtra’s tribal communities for bringing traditional products such as honey, mahua, chir and bamboo goods to market with modern packaging through Shabari Naturals. According to his remarks, the packaging received Japan’s Good Design Award, bringing recognition to indigenous creativity and design. He also highlighted renewed interest in khadi and handicrafts, which can support local artisans and traditional livelihoods. With Diwali and Chhath Puja approaching, Modi encouraged people to purchase goods made by local businesses and craftspeople and to participate in keeping their homes and surroundings clean. Reflecting on the 12 years of Mann Ki Baat, which began on Vijayadashami, he described the programme as a meaningful journey that has allowed him to recognise the dedication, service and achievements of ordinary citizens across India.
