The Madras High Court has strongly criticized the prevailing VIP darshan culture in temples, stating that all devotees are equal before God and no special category exists in places of worship. The court observed that religious spaces should not be influenced by status, position, or political power.
In a sharp remark, the bench said, “God alone is the real VIP in this universe and does not wait for anyone,” adding that ministers, MLAs, and public representatives cannot be allowed unrestricted or unscheduled entry into temples. The court further noted that such practices are causing inconvenience to ordinary devotees and undermining equality in religious spaces.
