The Delhi government has taken a major decision in the wake of the increase in air pollution in the winter months. Vehicles registered in other states that do not comply with BS-VI emission norms will not be allowed to enter Delhi from November 1. The restrictions will remain in force till January 31, 2027. The decision will affect more than 10 lakh vehicles in Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. According to the Department of Transportation, Gurugram and Faridabad districts of Haryana have nearly 2 lakh vehicles that do not meet BS-VI norms.
Of these, 70 per cent are BS-III and BS-IV vehicles. Also, more than 4 lakh vehicles in Noida and Greater Noida do not conform to these standards. Checks at Delhi's borders will be tightened to enforce the restrictions. ANPR cameras will be installed at key locations to automatically detect the number plates of the vehicles. With the help of AI-based cameras, vehicles that violate the rules will be identified. Vehicles that do not conform to BS-VI norms will also be prevented from entering Delhi through physical checks.
