Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath criticised India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, alleging that he failed to save freedom fighters who were sentenced to death following the Chauri Chaura incident. Speaking at an event in the Chauri Chaura constituency on Sunday, Yogi recalled that the British government had sentenced 172 people to death after protesters set a police station on fire, resulting in the deaths of several police personnel. He said Congress leaders often describe Nehru as a great lawyer, but alleged that he did not step forward to defend those facing execution.
Yogi said Madan Mohan Malaviya used legal arguments to save 151 people from the gallows. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured Malaviya with the Bharat Ratna in recognition of his contributions. Describing the Chauri Chaura martyrs as an important part of India's freedom struggle, Yogi said the incident also had an impact on the Congress leadership of that period.
