Torrential rains have thrown Mumbai into chaos, inundating low-lying areas and severely disrupting road traffic across the city. With several areas receiving over 20 cm of rainfall in the past 24 hours and some localities recording nearly 30 cm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert, warning of more intense rainfall. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary. While authorities stated that metro and public transport services are largely operational, commuters reported disruptions on several metro routes due to the persistent downpour.
The heavy rains have also affected Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai, and Pune, triggering landslides and widespread waterlogging. Rescue teams are shifting stranded residents to safer locations, while coastal communities have been advised to remain on high alert as sea waves are expected to rise up to 4.19 metres. BMC has asked citizens to report emergencies through its 1916 helpline. In a separate incident, industrialist Mukesh Ambani's security convoy narrowly escaped danger after a large tree collapsed in front of the convoy in Mumbai's Bandra area, briefly causing traffic congestion before authorities cleared the road.
