French football star Kylian Mbappe has faced major backlash in China following remarks he made during a French online show. The controversy erupted when the host asked him about his favourite meme. While responding, Mbappe made an indirect reference to Mao, describing him as a dictator from China. A short video clip of the conversation quickly went viral on Chinese social media, triggering widespread criticism. Mbappe apologised the following day, saying his comments had been misunderstood and that many people had been hurt by them.
However, the apology did not stop the fallout. Chinese companies, including Dongpeng, Mengniu and Milkground, reportedly ended their partnerships with Mbappe, stating that they could not work with someone who failed to respect national sentiments. China's state broadcaster CCTV also withdrew from broadcasting Real Madrid and Spanish La Liga matches, and stopped airing advertisements featuring the footballer. Although Mbappe, Real Madrid and La Liga issued apologies, the broadcasts have reportedly not resumed. The controversy has therefore affected not only Mbappe's brand associations but also football coverage in China.
