Karthika Masam holds special spiritual significance for devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. During this sacred month, devotees traditionally wake up early, take a holy bath, perform prayers and light lamps in the morning and evening. Morning lamp lighting is commonly practised after bathing, often between 5 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., depending on local sunrise timings and family traditions. Lighting a lamp around sunset is also considered important, particularly near the household shrine, Tulasi plant or entrance. Devotees believe these rituals bring spiritual peace and positivity.
Cow ghee and sesame oil are traditionally used for lighting lamps during Karthika Masam, while castor oil is used in certain regional customs. Devotees are advised to follow their family traditions or seek guidance from their priest regarding the choice of oil and prayer timings. Keeping the worship area clean, placing the lamp on a stable surface and remembering Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu during prayers are common practices. Special prayers are also performed on Karthika Mondays and Karthika Purnima. For safety, lamps should be kept away from flammable materials and out of children's reach.
