India Raises Concerns Over US Russia Sanctions Bill

India has expressed concern over the proposed US sanctions legislation targeting Russia and Iran. The US House of Representatives has passed the ‘Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’. If enacted, the legislation would give President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on certain countries that continue to purchase Russian oil and natural gas. Countries such as India and China, which are major buyers of Russian energy, could come within the scope of the provisions. However, the bill does not automatically impose a 100% tariff on India; it gives the US President the authority to impose such tariffs under specified conditions.

The Ministry of External Affairs said India has taken note of the bill’s passage in the US Congress and is monitoring further developments. The ministry reiterated that ensuring energy security for India’s 1.4 billion people remains a key priority and that the country will continue to rely on diversified energy sourcing based on evolving market conditions. India has also held discussions with US officials at senior levels on the issue. The MEA said India had clearly conveyed its concerns about the potential impact of the legislation on bilateral relations as well as international energy markets, while stressing its determination to protect its trade and economic interests.
