The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Madhya Pradesh. The seat became vacant following the resignation of former Union Minister L. Murugan. The party announced Puri’s candidature on Wednesday, providing clarity on his prospects for continuing in the Upper House of Parliament. Puri was previously elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, and his current term is scheduled to end in November.
Puri’s name was reportedly absent from the BJP’s earlier list of candidates for eight Rajya Sabha seats, triggering speculation about his political future and ministerial position amid the controversy surrounding the Epstein files. His nomination has now drawn attention to the party’s decision to field him for the Madhya Pradesh seat. The report suggests that his position as the only Sikh member in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet may have been a consideration, though the party has not officially stated its reasons. Polling for the by-election is scheduled for November 12.
