Sajjan Kumar, a former Congress MP who was serving a life sentence in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, died at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Thursday. He was brought to the hospital from Tihar Jail in a critical condition. Hospital authorities said resuscitation and life support measures were attempted, but he could not be saved. Kumar had a history of high blood pressure and Parkinson’s disease.
Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court in 2018 in a case involving the killing of five Sikhs and the burning of a gurdwara during the 1984 riots. In February 2025, he received another life sentence in a separate case involving the killing of two Sikh men. A three-time Lok Sabha member from Outer Delhi, Kumar resigned from the Congress after his 2018 conviction.
