Deep Depression to Bring Torrential Rain to North Andhra

The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, with extremely heavy rainfall likely on September 23 and 24. The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is expected to strengthen further into a deep depression during the next 24 hours. The system is likely to cross the North Andhra Pradesh–South Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur from the night of September 23 to the early hours of September 24. Strong winds are also expected along the coast, prompting authorities to advise fishermen not to venture into the sea from September 22 to 26.

The weather system is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, particularly across North Andhra districts. Several parts of the state have already recorded rainfall, with Shankhavaram in Kakinada district receiving 60.75 mm. The state government has stepped up preparedness, with Home and Disaster Management Minister Vangalapudi Anitha directing officials to closely monitor the flows of the Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers. SDRF and NDRF teams have been kept ready, while authorities have been asked to maintain round-the-clock control rooms, stock essential supplies and medicines, and shift people from low-lying areas to relief centres if required. Officials have also been instructed to restrict movement near vulnerable causeways and streams.
