Congress Slams Centre Over Covering Slums With Curtains During BRICS Summit

Congress MP Pawan Khera has launched a scathing attack on the central government over the covering of slum areas with curtains in Delhi during the BRICS summit. Taking to X and sharing a video, Khera mocked the BJP, saying that while the party does not accept all kinds of ‘hijabs’, it apparently has a special liking for a hijab that hides Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s failures.

Khera alleged that the Centre was taking such measures to conceal poverty and the country’s socio-economic realities from foreign delegates. Instead of eliminating poverty, he criticised the government for attempting to hide it from view and project an artificial image of the city to the world.Government agencies, however, defended the move.

They said that security arrangements, traffic management and beautification along routes used by VIPs are part of standard protocol. Curtains and barricades were installed along key routes from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the summit.The 18th BRICS Summit, which began in New Delhi on Sunday under India’s presidency, is being held under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Development, sustainability and innovation are among the key issues on the summit’s agenda.
