China has reportedly imposed restrictions on the import of Indian chillies, citing concerns over the presence of harmful chemical residues. Authorities stated that high levels of Methamidophos, a highly toxic pesticide affecting the nervous system, were found, prompting the decision to temporarily ban imports.
India is one of the major exporters of dried red chillies to China, with exports reaching significant volumes in recent years. However, issues such as pesticide residue and quality concerns, including moisture content, have led to rejection of shipments. China primarily uses Indian chillies for extracting oleoresin used in food flavoring.
