Centre Moves to Block BitChat App

The Central Government has reportedly directed GitHub to remove the Bluetooth based messaging application BitChat, citing national security concerns. The issue surfaced after GitHub CEO Jack Dorsey shared on X a copy of the notice he claimed was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The development comes amid heightened security measures during protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where internet services had also been restricted.

BitChat is a messaging application that enables users to exchange messages through Bluetooth without requiring mobile data, Wi-Fi, or internet connectivity. The app does not require phone numbers or user registration and offers end to end encryption for private conversations. Due to these privacy-focused features, it has gained attention among users in a short period.

According to officials, applications that function outside conventional communication networks could potentially be misused by criminals or cyber fraudsters to exchange information without detection. The government believes such platforms may pose security risks and has sought their removal. Technology experts say that while innovative communication tools improve convenience, preventing their misuse is equally important for cybersecurity and national security.
