The Bombay High Court has sharply criticised the increasing practice of spitting and littering in public places, remarking that it has become a "national habit." Hearing a matter related to civic cleanliness, the court expressed concern over the lack of effective enforcement and questioned the functioning of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in curbing such public nuisance.
The court observed that stricter measures are necessary to improve civic discipline and suggested increasing the penalty for offences such as public spitting and littering from ₹250 to ₹2,500. It stressed that stronger enforcement and higher fines could help discourage such behaviour and contribute to maintaining cleaner public spaces across the city.
