Paddy prices have reached record levels at the Kesamudram market in Mahabubabad district, Telangana. The Jai Sriram variety fetched a maximum price of ₹5,016 per quintal, while the RNR variety recorded ₹4,200 per quintal. Market sources attribute the sharp rise in paddy prices to the effects of El Niño. The increase could offer some relief to farmers selling their produce.
The government’s minimum support price (MSP) is ₹2,461 per quintal for fine-grain paddy and ₹2,441 for coarse-grain paddy, along with a bonus of ₹500 per quintal for the latter, as stated in the supplied information. With paddy prices rising, retail rice prices may also come under pressure. Jai Sriram rice is currently reported to be selling at ₹8,000–₹9,000 per quintal in the market.
