The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) is driving up electricity demand at data centres worldwide. Training and operating advanced AI models requires substantial computing power, putting additional pressure on existing electricity grids. With grid connections and regulatory approvals often taking considerable time, technology companies are exploring alternative ways to ensure a reliable and continuous power supply for their facilities. Fuel cell technology, which generates electricity using fuels such as natural gas or hydrogen, is attracting growing attention as one potential solution.
Fuel cells generate electricity through an electrochemical reaction between a fuel and oxygen. Depending on the technology and fuel used, these systems can offer efficient power generation and may be installed close to data centres. However, their environmental impact varies according to the fuel source and the overall production process. Companies such as Bloom Energy are developing solid-oxide fuel cell systems, while other manufacturers use different fuel cell technologies. Growing demand from AI data centres is creating business opportunities for the industry, although future growth will depend on factors such as project execution, fuel availability, installation costs and the ability to compete with other power solutions.
