Researchers have warned that artificial intelligence may gradually weaken human cognitive abilities such as critical thinking, reasoning, and independent decision making. A study involving over 30 researchers from leading institutions like MIT, Oxford University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Cornell University highlights that excessive reliance on AI could reduce essential human skills needed for scientific progress, governance, and crisis management.
The study describes these risks as “cognitive threats,” stating that over-dependence on AI for writing, analysis, and decision making may weaken natural thinking abilities over time. Evidence already shows reduced problem-solving skills among software engineers using AI tools, and lower brain activity in users relying heavily on AI generated content. Researchers also warned that students are increasingly copying AI generated answers, widening the gap between skillful and dependent learners.
