Two helicopters collided while attempting to land at the Pheriche helipad in Nepal’s Solukhumbu region on Tuesday morning, leaving an Indian passenger dead and two others injured. According to reports, the accident occurred just moments before landing when the rotors of the two helicopters struck each other. The incident triggered panic among people near the helipad, with several of them running for safety after witnessing the collision.
The deceased has been identified as 47-year-old Vasanth Kumar Balaramarama, whose home state in India is yet to be confirmed. He was travelling aboard a Fishtail Air helicopter. Shailesh Krishna Patel, a 49-year-old New Zealand citizen of Indian origin, was also injured in the incident. The pilot of the Air Dynasty helicopter sustained injuries as well, police said. The injured were shifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment. Helicopters are widely used in Nepal for tourism, mountaineering, cargo transportation and emergency evacuations. However, mountainous terrain and rapidly changing weather conditions make aviation operations challenging. Recently, a helicopter crash in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district claimed the lives of six people, including the pilot.
