The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is preparing to introduce a new centralized food surveillance system to strengthen food safety across the country. The main objective of this initiative is to bring the currently separate state-level food testing and surveillance processes onto a single digital platform.
Under the new system, food samples will be directly collected from markets and tested in approved laboratories. The mechanism is expected to help authorities quickly identify adulterated, low-quality, or non-compliant food products and issue digital alerts to concerned officials. The authority has also proposed collecting at least 50 percent of surveillance samples from large supply chains to enhance monitoring of major brands and food networks.
