Reliance Jio, led by Mukesh Ambani, has taken a major step towards entering India's satellite broadband market. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) has granted technical approval to Jio's proposal to deploy around 1,600 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The approval followed a detailed technical review conducted in coordination with ISRO and the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing of the Department of Telecommunications.
With this approval, the Central Government will support Jio in securing orbital slots and spectrum rights from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The project is expected to become India's first indigenous satellite constellation and is being compared to Elon Musk's Starlink in terms of capability.
Jio's proposed network is expected to provide 4.5 to 5 terabits per second of data capacity over India, significantly higher than currently approved satellite broadband systems. The company also plans to establish 20–22 ground stations across the country, enabling high-speed internet in remote and border areas along with Direct-to-Device (D2D) connectivity. Reports also suggest that the project could support strategic defence requirements, though no official confirmation has been issued.
