Commuters in the Delhi-NCR region are likely to face significant inconvenience as a massive three-day ‘Chakka Jam’ protest began on Thursday, May 21. The strike, called by commercial vehicle associations, is aimed at demanding a hike in transport fares in line with rising fuel prices and operational costs. Taxi operators, auto-rickshaw drivers, and other transport community members have decided to stay off roads, severely impacting the city’s transport system. Around 68 affiliated unions, including the All India Motor Transport Congress and the United Front of All Transport Associations, are participating, with nearly four lakh registered taxi operators joining the protest.
Due to the strike, regular auto-rickshaws, commercial taxi services, and app-based cab platforms like Ola and Uber are expected to be heavily affected, while Delhi Metro and DTC bus services will continue as usual. Transport unions have demanded an immediate revision of fares, stating that taxi charges have not been increased in the last 15 years despite rising CNG prices, permits, and insurance costs. They have warned that if the government does not respond positively within two weeks, the protests will be intensified further.
