The government has announced stricter measures to curb fake SIM cards, cyber fraud and digital arrest scams. Telecom companies will now be required to verify customer details in real time through the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) before issuing a new SIM card. If the platform detects suspicious or fake identity information, the issuance of the SIM will be stopped.
Authorities will also monitor the number of SIM cards registered in an individual’s name. The maximum limit is set at nine SIM cards per person in most areas, while the limit will be six in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-Eastern states. The measures are aimed at preventing the misuse of fake identities and SIM cards for cybercrime and digital fraud.
