WhatsApp has begun rolling out support for group voice and video calls on its web platform, bringing browser users closer to the experience already available on mobile and desktop applications. The feature is currently being tested with select beta users and allows participants to initiate voice or video calls directly from group chats without needing the desktop app. Users can also choose specific participants from a group instead of automatically adding everyone to a call.
The new feature supports up to 32 participants for both voice and video calls, matching the limits available on WhatsApp's mobile and desktop versions. Group calls on WhatsApp Web will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption using the Signal protocol. Additional features include call invitation links, waiting room controls, and screen-sharing support during video calls. The update is expected to benefit browser-based users, especially those on Linux systems where a dedicated WhatsApp desktop application is not available.
