UN Report Flags Gender Bias in AI

A new United Nations (UN) report has raised concerns that artificial intelligence is not as neutral as commonly believed and continues to reinforce gender stereotypes. According to the report, the large language models that power AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini often associate women with household responsibilities, childcare and family roles, while linking men with business, leadership and professional careers. The report notes that instead of challenging long-standing social biases, AI systems may unintentionally amplify them through their responses to millions of users.

The report further warns that inadequate safeguards could increase discrimination against women in employment and other sectors where AI is increasingly used. As AI-driven screening tools become common in recruitment, gender bias could influence hiring decisions by associating leadership traits with men and caregiving roles with women. The report also highlights the misuse of AI in creating deepfake content, noting that the overwhelming majority of deepfake pornography targets women. It calls for stronger safeguards, ethical AI development and continuous monitoring to ensure fairness and reduce harmful bias.
