Tech giant Google has introduced major updates to its popular navigation app, Google Maps. Describing it as the biggest upgrade in the past decade, the company has rolled out a new feature called Ask Maps, powered by Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI), along with a visual update named Immersive Navigation. The new features were announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai. According to the company, these updates aim to make the navigation experience faster, smarter and more user-friendly for users.
The newly introduced Ask Maps feature functions like a personal assistant, allowing users to ask questions directly within the Maps app and receive relevant information instantly. For example, users can ask questions such as Where is the nearest public restroom with less crowd? or My phone battery is running low where can I find a place to charge it without waiting in a long queue? Even complex and specific queries like these can be answered instantly with the help of Gemini AI. Users can simply tap on the Ask Maps button to ask their questions. The app not only provides answers but also displays a relevant map view to help users locate the place easily. Currently, this feature has been rolled out to Android and iOS users in India and the United States and it is expected to arrive on the desktop version in the near future.
In addition to this, Google has also introduced a new visual upgrade called Immersive Navigation, which significantly enhances the overall Maps experience. With this feature, users can see 3D buildings, more realistic roads, greener surroundings and improved color details, making navigation clearer and more intuitive. Google stated that the goal of this feature is to reduce confusion while driving and provide more accurate route guidance. The update has initially been launched in the United States. In the coming months, it will be rolled out to Android and iOS devices in other countries, as well as to CarPlay, Android Auto and cars equipped with Google built-in systems.
