World’s richest businessman and Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk has unveiled ambitious plans to further expand his business empire. Highlighting the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, Musk announced his vision to establish data centers in space as a long-term solution to rising energy and cooling demands. To support these plans financially, he recently merged his AI venture with SpaceX, creating a new combined entity that is expected to go public through an IPO in the near future. Musk explained that future AI systems will require enormous power and infrastructure, and space-based data centers powered by solar energy could offer a sustainable alternative.
As part of this vision, Musk revealed his goal of deploying nearly one million satellites into Earth’s orbit to support space-based data centers. However, scientists and industry experts have raised serious concerns about the feasibility of these plans. They warn that data centers generate significant heat, which could cause computer chips to overheat more rapidly in space compared to Earth. Experts have also cautioned that a massive increase in satellite numbers could raise the risk of collisions in orbit, especially when nearly 10,000 Starlink satellites are already operational. While Musk’s vision is bold, experts believe it faces major technical and financial challenges ahead.
