OpenAI and The Walt Disney Company have entered into a landmark three-year licensing and investment agreement that allows users to create short AI-generated videos and images featuring more than 200 iconic Disney characters through OpenAI’s generative video platform, Sora, and ChatGPT’s image tools. As part of the deal, Disney will invest $1 billion (approximately Rs. 8,300 crore) in OpenAI and receive warrants to acquire additional equity. The agreement grants OpenAI access to characters and visual assets from Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, enabling fans to generate content featuring characters like Mickey Mouse, Ariel, Iron Man, and Darth Vader along with their environments, costumes, and props.
However, the licensing does not include actor likenesses or original voice recordings, ensuring protections for performers and creators. During the agreement period, Disney plans to showcase selected fan-generated AI videos on Disney+, offering creators a new platform for visibility. In addition to licensing, Disney will become a major customer of OpenAI, integrating its APIs into Disney+ features and internal tools powered by ChatGPT. Disney CEO Robert A. Iger emphasized that the collaboration aims to responsibly expand storytelling through generative AI while respecting creative ownership.
