Rohit Sharma’s Retirement Speculation Unfounded- BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has put an end to the recent speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s international retirement, particularly his future in ODI cricket. Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Test cricket but continues to play ODIs. Although reports had suggested that he might retire after India’s recent England series, the veteran batter has not announced any such decision. Saikia said Rohit has been performing exceptionally well and pointed to his 138-run knock against England, questioning the need for retirement speculation. He added that he did not want to encourage such reports.

The BCCI’s review meeting also discussed the increasing number of injuries among Indian players and the need for better recovery and workload management. Saikia said there was no coordination issue between the Centre of Excellence and the Indian team and that the board was working to reduce injuries. He also said more practice matches would be arranged during overseas tours to countries such as South Africa, Australia, England and New Zealand. Saikia clarified that chief selector Ajit Agarkar missed the meeting because he received the information late and was not in Mumbai, while no discussion took place on extending his tenure or appointing VVS Laxman as cricket director. Laxman, however, will serve as India’s interim head coach at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, with Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Shubhadeep Ghosh as assistant coaches.
