Devdutt Padikkal has made a strong statement with the bat after getting an opportunity in India’s first Test against Sri Lanka. With Sai Sudharsan unavailable, Padikkal stepped into the No. 3 position and produced an impressive performance. He scored 167 in the first innings and followed it with 44 in the second, playing a key role in India’s big first-innings total. His century also ended a long wait for an Indian No. 3 batter to register a Test hundred.
Padikkal had already scored a century in the warm-up game before the Test, making his latest performance even more significant. With comparisons emerging over whether India may have found a dependable long-term No. 3, the Karnataka batter said he does not want to get involved in selection debates. He stressed that he is ready to bat anywhere whenever an opportunity comes his way and believes performance is the ultimate measure in a highly competitive team. His ability to handle spin and build a substantial innings earned praise from former cricketers.
