India experienced contrasting results at the BWF World Championships in New Delhi, with medal hopeful Lakshya Sen making an early exit. The Indian shuttler lost to American Garrett Tan in a closely contested three-game second-round encounter. After taking the opening game, Lakshya was unable to maintain his momentum as Tan fought back to secure victory. Meanwhile, young Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty continued his impressive campaign with a comfortable straight-game win over Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama, progressing to the pre-quarterfinals. Shetty had earlier stunned world No. 1 and defending champion Shi Yuqi in a major first-round upset.
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu also moved into the pre-quarterfinals after defeating Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang in straight games. Sindhu, who is targeting a sixth World Championships medal, will face China’s Wang Zhi Yi in the next round. In men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced directly to the pre-quarterfinals after receiving a walkover. However, Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun were eliminated after losing to South Korea’s Kang Min Hyuk and Ki Dong Ju. Youngster Unnati Hooda also bowed out after a hard-fought defeat against Canada’s Michelle Li.
