For nearly 12 years, Ravichandran Ashwin carried much of India’s Test spin responsibility before announcing his retirement midway through the 2024 Australia tour. His departure left a significant gap in India’s spin department, but young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar is quickly emerging as a strong contender to fill that void. Suthar made an impressive Test debut against Afghanistan in India, taking seven wickets and earning Player of the Match honours. He has now taken his performance to another level in Sri Lanka, claiming 10 wickets in the Galle Test and making a strong impression on a venue where Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya has enjoyed considerable success. Suthar’s performance was particularly notable because experienced spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who has 18 Tests under his belt, managed only one wicket in the match. Suthar combined sharp turn with variations in pace, flight and trajectory to trouble Sri Lanka’s batters. While he benefited from a pitch offering assistance to spin, his control and skill played a major role in his success. The Rajasthan youngster has made a powerful start to his Test career, although his long-term consistency and development will be closely watched. For now, Suthar has given India a fresh and encouraging option in the spin department.
