One of the biggest deals in Indian Premier League history has taken place, as the Rajasthan Royals franchise has been sold for $1.63 billion (around ₹15,280–₹15,300 crore). The team has been fully acquired by a consortium led by US-based entrepreneur Kal Somani, who has now completed the purchase of 100% ownership of the franchise.
Kal Somani is the founder of companies such as IntraEdge, Academian and Truyo.AI. His consortium also has financial backing from well-known American businessman Rob Walton from the Walmart family and the Hamp family, who own major stakes in the Detroit Lions NFL team. Reports say the deal also has links to the Ford family, which co-owns Ford Motor Company. The new ownership will officially take charge of the franchise after the IPL 2026 season, making Rajasthan Royals the most expensive team sale in IPL history.
Meanwhile, the team also made a player change for the upcoming season. England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 season due to injury, and Sri Lanka’s T20 captain Dasun Shanaka has been signed as his replacement. Earlier, Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja had moved to Rajasthan Royals from Chennai Super Kings, while CSK acquired Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson in the trade.
