Suvendu Adhikari has been confirmed as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. During a meeting of MLAs held today in Kolkata, presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Suvendu Adhikari was elected to the post of Chief Minister. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 11:00 AM at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Reports suggest that, in addition to the Chief Minister, two Deputy Chief Ministers will also be appointed.
BJP President Samik Bhattacharya proposed Suvendu Adhikari's name for the Chief Ministership, following which all the MLAs unanimously elected him as their leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Union Ministers and the Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states, is expected to attend tomorrow's swearing-in ceremony. As a BJP government is being formed in Bengal for the very first time, Suvendu Adhikari—who is set to assume the responsibilities of Chief Minister—is poised to make history.
In the recently concluded elections, Suvendu Adhikari defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency. He had also secured a victory against Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 elections. In these elections, the BJP achieved a resounding victory by winning 207 out of the 294 seats, while the Trinamool Congress party was limited to just 80 seats.
