The battle between the Republican and Democratic parties for control of the US Senate has become a major focus of the 2026 midterm elections. Before the elections, Republicans held a 53-seat majority, while Democrats and two independents aligned with them accounted for 47 seats. Republicans aimed to retain their advantage, while Democrats sought to gain enough seats to take control of the chamber. Several key states became battlegrounds as both parties stepped up their campaigns.

Following the November 3 elections, preliminary results indicate Democratic victories in several important contests. Democrat Roy Cooper flipped a Republican-held Senate seat in North Carolina, while Jon Ossoff retained his seat in Georgia and Chris Pappas won in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, contests in states such as Alaska, Kansas, Ohio and Texas remain important in determining the final balance of power. The outcome of these races will have a significant impact on the political balance in the US Congress.
