India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly defended the country's policy on purchasing Russian oil and responded sharply to criticism from European nations. Speaking at a discussion in Finland, Jaishankar questioned the moral authority of countries that criticize India’s energy choices while simultaneously supplying weapons to nations hostile to India. He emphasized that India’s decisions are guided by national interests, energy security, and economic considerations.
Responding to concerns about India's continued imports of Russian oil since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Jaishankar noted that India purchases oil based on availability and pricing. He pointed out that, at the time, a significant portion of oil available in global markets came from Russia, while several European nations were sourcing energy from regions that traditionally supplied India. The minister also highlighted what he described as inconsistencies in Western policies regarding sanctions, trade, and energy security, reaffirming that India would continue to make independent decisions based on its strategic priorities.
