Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has raised concerns over the decline in student enrolment in government schools in the state. Taking to X, he said enrolment in government schools fell from 40,50,116 in 2023-24 to 34,93,450 in 2025-26, a decline of 5,56,666 students. He also pointed to a reduction in the number of government schools from 45,000 to 44,222 and aided schools from 991 to 797.
Jagan also said enrolment in private schools increased from 45,53,380 to 48,40,296 during the same period. He claimed the UDISE+ figures contradict the state government’s assertion that student enrolment in government schools has increased. Jagan alleged that the coalition government is weakening quality public education in Andhra Pradesh. There was no immediate response from the ruling TDP to the allegations.
