The United States’ most powerful aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, has withdrawn from the conflict zone and is heading toward Souda Bay in Crete, Greece, a key NATO base, for repairs. The move follows a major fire that broke out in the ship’s laundry section on March 12. Two sailors were injured in the incident and received medical treatment.
The carrier is currently sailing through the Red Sea toward Crete, where it will undergo immediate repair work. However, the rest of the carrier strike group continues to remain in the operational zone and is not accompanying the vessel. While the Pentagon has not issued an immediate response to reports first highlighted by USNI News, there are allegations that the severity of the incident is being downplayed. The New York Times reported that nearly 600 crew berths were destroyed and that the fire burned for nearly 30 hours before being contained.
