The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has announced stricter regulations on carrying power banks and lithium battery–operated devices on flights, citing growing safety concerns worldwide. Under the new rules, passengers are strictly prohibited from charging power banks onboard aircraft or using them with in-seat power systems. Such devices must be carried personally in cabin baggage and cannot be packed in checked luggage. The decision follows several global incidents involving overheating and explosions of lithium batteries during flights.
DGCA stated that airlines must be informed about passengers carrying lithium battery-powered devices, and any signs such as overheating, smoke, or unusual odor must be immediately reported to cabin crew. Emphasising passenger safety, the regulator has directed airlines to create awareness through regular announcements and ensure swift reporting of any lithium battery-related incidents to the DGCA. The move comes in the wake of incidents like the October power bank explosion aboard an IndiGo flight at Delhi Airport, which fortunately did not result in injuries.
