In a grand White House ceremony, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Inter Miami, the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) champions. During the event, football superstar Lionel Messi was specially honored for his exceptional contributions to the team. President Trump remarked that this was a unique honor that no previous American president had received.
Speaking at the event, Trump said, “It is a great pleasure to host the 2025 MLS Cup champions, Inter Miami, at the White House. This is a special opportunity that no American president has previously had. Welcome, Lionel Messi.” He praised Messi for elevating Inter Miami’s global impact since joining the squad.
Trump added, “Many international stars come to the American leagues with high expectations but fail to win titles. Messi came and he won. This is extraordinary.” He highlighted Inter Miami’s record-breaking season, noting 101 goals and a historic victory over a European team in the FIFA Club World Cup. Messi scored 29 goals in the regular season, won the Golden Boot and was named league MVP for the second consecutive season, marking the 47th trophy of his career an all-time record.
Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas commented that seven years ago, Inter Miami was just an idea, but Messi’s arrival transformed the team. He credited the players with permanently changing the culture of football in the United States. The ceremony concluded with President Trump inviting team members and officials to the Oval Office.
