Amid reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei in a joint Israel–U.S. strike, protests have erupted in several countries. In this context, demonstrations were also held in Hyderabad. Under the leadership of Nampally AIMIM MLA Majid Hussain, hundreds of Shia Muslims took to the streets carrying photographs of Khamenei and black flags, raising slogans against Israel. The protests, which began in the afternoon, continued until midnight, drawing significant public attention.
Against the backdrop of rising tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States, many residents of Hyderabad have been recalling the city’s historical ties with Iran. Analysts note that Iranian influence is evident in Hyderabad’s architecture, cuisine and cultural traditions. Historical records indicate that Mir Momin Astarabadi, regarded as the architect of Hyderabad, hailed from Persia (present-day Iran). The Qutb Shahi rulers who founded the city and later the Asaf Jahi (Nizam) dynasty, also had Persian roots.
As a reflection of this longstanding association, certain localities in the city bear references to Iran. The Irani Galli in the Old City is often cited as an example. Additionally, the area around Road No. 7 in Banjara Hills, where the Iranian Consulate is located, is also associated with Khamenei’s name, which has come into discussion in recent developments.
