Tensions have risen in the Kashmir Valley following protests against the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Anticipating large demonstrations after Friday prayers, authorities imposed strict restrictions and heightened security across several areas to prevent unrest.
Hurriyat Conference chairman and chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed concern over the situation. He alleged that he had been placed under house arrest and that the historic Jamia Masjid was closed by authorities. Taking to X, he said imposing such restrictions during the holy month of Ramadan was unfortunate.
