The primary responsibility of the police is to ensure the safety and protection of citizens. Unfortunately, that purpose has long been overshadowed by political interference. Over the years, law enforcement has increasingly been used as a tool to serve political interests, leaving public safety neglected. Many officers now focus more on pleasing political leaders than upholding justice, often violating the law with impunity, relying on political backing for protection.
A recent incident at the Kasibugga Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Srikakulam district stands as proof of this negligence. Despite being known as “Uddanam Tirupati” and holding great significance, the temple management failed to ensure proper crowd control during Ekadashi celebrations. Shockingly, the local police too appeared completely unaware of the situation.
Every police station assigns specific responsibilities to officers — from constables to inspectors — who are expected to monitor their jurisdictions regularly. Constables are tasked with staying connected to their villages, coordinating with local volunteers and monitoring developments daily. However, the current system has deviated far from this structure.
From home guards to top officials like the DGP, political influence dictates their actions. Instead of focusing on law and order, they often prioritize arresting critics of ruling leaders on social media or filing false cases against opposition members to gain political favor.
Instances of police obstructing opposition leaders’ tours or imposing arbitrary restrictions during political visits have become disturbingly common. Courts have repeatedly expressed serious concern over such misuse of police powers, yet no corrective action has followed.
Fearing poor postings or transfers without political support, many officers have surrendered their integrity and professional ethics. This blind loyalty to politicians has led to a dangerous erosion of public trust. Until police officers reclaim their true sense of duty and accountability to the people, such incidents will continue to recur — leaving citizens unprotected and justice compromised.
