With smartphones and unlimited data giving unrestricted access to social media platforms, several individuals are misusing digital freedom by posting irresponsible and misleading content in the name of freedom of expression. Influencers promoting banned applications, running fake “lucky draw” schemes and publishing videos claiming cars, villas and land could be purchased at throwaway prices have come under police scrutiny. Cases have been registered against ten such individuals for cheating and spreading misinformation. City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar warned that posting unchecked content without understanding its consequences could disturb public order and invite strict legal action. Citizens were advised not to believe rumours circulated through WhatsApp groups and Facebook, and to immediately inform police by dialling 100.
Police action intensified after several incidents triggered public unrest. A YouTuber was arrested for posting a derogatory video on a person who died in a fire accident, which later led to disputes after it was widely shared. In another instance, provocative comments made during a recent public meeting drew excessive reactions online, raising fears of clashes between groups. Following the arrest of iBOMMA platform operator Ravi, some users crossed limits by trolling film personalities and senior police officials, prompting fresh cases. Investigations also revealed that a few influencers operating from abroad were funding local YouTube channels and directing them to create provocative videos. With upcoming festivals and elections, the police have heightened surveillance to prevent the spread of rumours and maintain law and order.
