The Transport Department has decided to introduce key changes to the driving license system in an effort to curb the rising number of road accidents across the country. In addition to the existing Learners' License (LLR) and the permanent driving test, a new online test on road safety awareness is set to be made mandatory. This decision was taken against the backdrop of the hundreds of thousands of road accidents that occur annually within the nation.
Under the new system, applicants can take the road safety test—which consists of six modules—from the comfort of their own homes. Each module lasts for 30 minutes, bringing the total duration of the examination to three hours. Through this test, awareness regarding road safety, traffic regulations, and accident prevention will be imparted to candidates via video modules. Applicants will be eligible to apply for a Learners' License only after successfully passing this examination.
