The Rajya Sabha has approved, by voice vote, a bill granting statutory status to Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. An extensive discussion, lasting 149 minutes, took place regarding the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill introduced by the Central Government. While 16 members representing 10 political parties—including the Congress and the BJP—expressed their support for the bill, the YSRCP opposed it and staged a walkout. Members opined that, with the passage of this bill, the uncertainty surrounding the issue of the state capital has been resolved for the future.
Members participating in the debate lauded the agitations undertaken by farmers and women in support of Amaravati. In particular, they praised the vision of Chandrababu Naidu, expressing confidence that he would transform Amaravati into a world-class city, just as he had developed Hyderabad. Responding to the bill, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai stated that this is a historic decision and a pivotal milestone for the development of Andhra Pradesh.
Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan extended his best wishes to the people of Andhra Pradesh on behalf of the citizens of the nation. The bill is now set to become law immediately upon receiving the assent of President Droupadi Murmu. On this occasion, Minister Nara Lokesh, who was observing the proceedings from the Rajya Sabha gallery, expressed his gratitude to the House immediately after the bill was passed. Notably, this marks the first instance in the country where a specific statutory status has been accorded to a capital city.
