The Kerala High Court has directed that The Kerala Story 2 be screened before the court prior to its theatrical release. The observation came amid allegations that the film portrays the state of Kerala inaccurately and could potentially trigger religious tensions. The court stated that public concerns regarding sensitive content cannot be ignored, especially since the film carries the name of the state in its title.
During the hearing of a petition challenging the film’s censor certification, the court clarified that it generally refrains from intervening in matters related to freedom of expression in cinema. However, considering the controversy surrounding the film, the court agreed to examine the issue and ordered a special screening on February 25 before taking a final decision on the certification. Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, the film recently received a ‘U/A’ certificate from the censor board and serves as a sequel to the controversial 2023 film The Kerala Story. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has urged people to remain cautious and called for a boycott, while the film is scheduled for release on February 27.
