The Kazipet Coach Factory is being developed as a full-fledged ‘Green Campus’, with the Railways focusing on eco-friendly construction and sustainable resource management. The project aims to maximize natural light, conserve water resources, and significantly reduce electricity consumption.
Spread across 160.4 acres, the factory construction has reached nearly 75 percent completion. In the first phase, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited invested Rs. 521 crore.
For manufacturing coaches, engines, and wagons, structures are being built over an area of 60,933 square meters. To cut down daytime electricity usage, glass roofing sheets are being installed on the top and sides of the sheds so that natural sunlight can illuminate the factory floor.
Large-scale, megawatt-peak solar power roofs are also being added to further reduce dependency on conventional power. The entire facility is being equipped with LED lighting and energy-efficient electrical components.
As part of pollution-free planning, five small ponds have been dug around the factory to store rainwater. This water will not only serve factory needs but will also help recharge the groundwater table in the surrounding area.
Sewage treatment plants and wastewater recycling units are being set up to ensure that waste water generated by thousands of employees can be reused for gardening and other non-potable purposes. In addition, extensive plantation drives are being carried out in every available open space around the factory.
Overall, railway officials are successfully implementing the green-campus model, transforming the Kazipet Coach Factory into an environmentally sustainable industrial zone.
