Actor and TVK leader Vijay did not get relief from the Madras High Court, which dismissed his petition challenging the penalty imposed by the Income Tax Department. The case relates to notices issued by the department directing him to pay a penalty of ₹1.50 crore for the 2015–16 financial year. Vijay had approached the High Court in 2022 contesting the penalty, and after reserving its verdict last month, the court has now rejected the petition.
According to the Income Tax Department, Vijay had declared an income of ₹35 crore for the 2015–16 financial year in his tax return. However, during assessment proceedings and subsequent verification of documents seized during searches, it was found that an income of ₹15 crore received for the film Puli was not disclosed in the accounts. Citing concealment of income, the department imposed a penalty of ₹1.50 crore. Although Vijay challenged this decision before the High Court, the court declined to accept his arguments.
Meanwhile, Vijay’s latest film Jana Nayagan has also run into controversy. The film, which was scheduled for release on January 9, has been postponed due to certification-related issues. With no official announcement on a new release date yet, anticipation among fans continues to grow.
